IN BRIEF: What happened to the Boston Bruins?

The Bruins lost their NHL round robin finale Sunday afternoon to the Washington Capitals. Boston was outscored 9-4 in these three games, and as a result of finishing at the bottom of the round robin standings, the B’s will be the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs despite winning the Presidents’ Trophy during the regular season.

The Bruins showed a little fight in the third period and cut the lead in half on a Jake DeBrusk goal, but they weren’t able to finish the comeback. Boston’s power play never scored in the round robin (0-for-9), the top line tallied one point in the three games and the goaltending wasn’t anything spectacular.

The B’s must give a much better effort to avoid a first-round playoff upset to the Carolina Hurricanes.

BRUINS RECORD: 0-3-0 (in round robin)

The Bruins outshot the Capitals 6-2 in the first period and played pretty well overall in the opening 20 minutes, but Washington went into the intermission on top thanks to a T.J. Oshie goal with 16 seconds remaining.

After a scoreless second period, it didn’t take long for the Capitals to double their lead in the third period. Capitals forward Tom Wilson beat Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask glove side 2:49 into the final frame.

The Bruins were desperate for a goal and Jake DeBrusk finally answered the ball at 10:30 of the third period. It was DeBrusk’s first goal of the round robin and trimmed Washington’s lead to 2-1.

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs start this coming week and the Bruins will play the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round. The schedule for the first round of the playoffs has not yet been announced.

The Boston Bruins will play a familiar foe in the first round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After finishing at the bottom of the NHL’s round robin standings and earning the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference as a result, the B’s will take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Round 1. It’s a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference Final, which the Bruins won in a sweep.

The schedule, including the dates and times for each Round 1 game, has not been announced at this time.

The Bruins and Hurricanes played only once during the 2019-20 regular season — a 2-0 win for the B’s at TD Garden on Dec. 3.

The Hurricanes are not an easy opponent, and looked pretty good in their qualifying round sweep of the New York Rangers during which they outscored the Blueshirts 11-3. Carolina also ranked 11th in goals scored, eighth in power play percentage, fourth in penalty killing, third in 5-on-5 shot attempt percentage and third in 5-on-5 scoring chances allowed during the regular season. Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho’s eight points were one behind Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid for the qualifying round lead.

The Bruins went 0-3-0 in the round robin and will need to play at a much higher level to eliminate the Hurricanes in the first round. The ‘Canes are better than they were last season, and their roster has a lot more experience after last year’s playoff run.

David Pastrnak’s odd tweet about Tom Wilson from a couple of weeks ago came back to bite him on Sunday.

The Boston Bruins star confused his followers when he randomly tweeted, “In my opinion Tom Wilson is the best goal scorer in the league.” He later explained that the tweet was the result of losing a bet against Wilson.

As funny as it was at the time, Pastrnak and B’s fans weren’t laughing on Sunday. Wilson scored Washington’s second goal against the Bruins, and the Capitals’ Twitter account just couldn’t help itself:

Pastrnak may want to avoid making bets with Wilson from now on.

As a result of their 2-1 loss to the Capitals, the Bruins will begin their 2020 Stanley Cup run with a first-round matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. Washington will go up against the New York Islanders.
