Seven males arrested following first light raids across Rochdale

Seven men have been arrested following dawn raids across Rochdale.

Officers smashed into ten houses on Thursday morning (July 30) as part of a crackdown on an organised crime group operating across the borough.

About arrested
An arrest is the act of apprehending and taking a person into custody (legal protection or control), usually because the person has been suspected of or observed committing a crime. After being taken into custody, the person can be questioned further and/or charged. An arrest is a procedure in a criminal justice system.
Police and various other officers have powers of arrest. In some places, a citizen’s arrest is permitted; for example in England and Wales, any person can arrest “anyone whom he has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be committing, have committed or be guilty of committing an indictable offence”, although certain conditions must be met before taking such action. Similar powers exist in France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland if a person is caught in an act of crime and not willing or able to produce valid ID.
As a safeguard against the abuse of power, many countries require that an arrest must be made for a thoroughly justified reason, such as the requirement of probable cause in the United States. Furthermore, in most democracies, the time that a person can be detained in custody is relatively short (in most cases 24 hours in the United Kingdom and France and 24 or 48 hours in the United States) before the detained person must be either charged or released.

About following
Following is a 1998 British independent neo-noir crime thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. It tells the story of a young man who follows strangers around the streets of London and is drawn into a criminal underworld when he fails to keep his distance.
As Christopher Nolan’s debut feature, it was designed to be as inexpensive as possible to make. Scenes were heavily rehearsed so that just one or two takes were needed to economise on 16mm film stock, the production’s greatest expense, and for which Nolan was paying from his salary. Unable to afford expensive professional lighting equipment, Nolan mostly used available light. Along with writing, directing, and photographing the film, Nolan also helped in editing and production.
Following was released by The Criterion Collection on both Blu-ray and DVD in North America on 11 December 2012.

They arrested seven men – aged between 18 and 27 – on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs and participating in the activities of an organised crime group.

They all remain in custody for questioning.

The warrants were executed as part of Operation Ovine – an investigation into an organised crime group who are believed to be supplying drugs in the Falinge and Freehold areas of Rochdale.

Detective Inspector Karl Ward, from GMP’s Complex Safeguarding Hub, said: “We currently have seven men in custody which is a testament to the dedication of our officers and the months of hard work and time spent investigating in order to disrupt this organised crime group.

“Today’s actions demonstrate that GMP, supported by our Rochdale local authority partners, will not tolerate this activity in our communities, and I am thankful to members of the local community who have provided valuable information that has been crucial in assisting us with this investigation.

“Drugs can have a devastating impact on communities and the importance of this operation should not be underestimated.

“There will be an increased presence of Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers from the Rochdale Neighbourhood team in the Falinge and Freehold areas over the next coming days, and I encourage any residents who may have any questions as a result of this operation to speak with them about your concerns.”
