BBC One is unveiling its latest big Sunday night drama tonight, in the shape of their adaptation of the novel A Suitable Boy.

The romantic drama, set in post-Partition India in 1951, tells the story of Lata Mehra (Tanya Maniktala), a literature student who wants to make her own way in the world in spite of her family’s attempt to arrange a marriage for her.

Who wrote the book of A Suitable Boy and when was it published?

A Suitable Boy was written by Vikram Seth, and was published in 1993.

It is one of the longest books ever published in a single volume in the English language, weighing in at 1,349 pages in its hardback edition, and 1,488 pages in paperback – and totally 591,552 words in total.

The book was critically acclaimed, also making the BBC’s list of the 100 most inspiring novels in 2019 – but this is the first time it’s ever been adapted for the screen.
